Onyx Ashanti (Detroit, beatjazz)
What is Beatjazz?
Beatjazz is what you get when you cross a sci-fi obsessed electronic jazz artist with a futurologist instrument inventor. The result of 20 years of conceptualization that has taken Onyx Ashanti on a conceptual journey from Mississippi to California to London to NYC and finally to Berlin, where he now resides.
Beatjazz is a completely live, improvised form of electronic music with no boundaries. Onyx creates all aspects of his self-created style, live, from scratch…nothing pre-recorded or pre-concieved. He plays each part, one part at a time and builds one-of-a-kind sonic-architecture. So, to aid in this concept, he has made use of cutting edge 3D printing technology (the open source Reprap) to create a one-of-a-kind musical instrument to play it with. he calls it a beatjazz control interface, with which every motion and every breath is creating sound which he transforms into space-age funky grooves.
usually, ‘artists” have a bio, which is short for biography, to give to a vague idea of who they are, what they have done artistically, what they are about and what they are going to bring to an event, creatively, but onyx ashanti doesnt have a bio. yeah, he has played with alot of interesting people and in many interesting places for the last 25 years or so, but none of that is relevant anymore…right now, he is in the process of transforming himself into…whatever his poly-dimensional process of 3d printing, programming, sound design, cybernetics and iterative philosophy, turns him into. he designed sonocybernetics as a way to consolidate his many interests into a single form, whose efficacy is determined by his iterated ability to create and evolve complexity, efficiently. he is on the other side of a singularity which produces a trajectory of singularities. there is no bio for that yet. coming and interacting with him is the best way to get the most reliable temporal status.
Allie Blumas (Hamilton)
This piece, currently untitled, is an exploration of sound through the moving body. It’s about capturing and extending the internal body functions beyond the parameters of our skin and fine-tuning our understanding of our intimate selves. Fusing somatic dance explorations and live sound manipulations, this 20 minute performance amplifies the subtleness of the physical self into delicate moving tapestries to be danced to, felt and heard.
After graduating from Concordia University in 2013 with a BFA in Contemporary Dance, Allie moved to Toronto to further her artistic journey. As a founding member of Toronto based dance collective Open Fortress, Allie explores collaboration through movement to to explore and challenge the way dance is commonly expressed and experienced. She is also a member of the musical group DOOMSQUAD and a founding member of Heretical Objects Cooperative.
